For the Lolz
In the project, For the Lolz, I hand embroidered two rape jokes by the comic, Sarah Silverman. The project explores ideas about what one can and cannot joke about, and where it is acceptable to cross the line. Topics such as sexual violence affect everyone, so many comedians address it in their acts. Some use it as shock value. Others use it to make critical points about the issue. I chose to embroider two jokes that reflected both sides of this spectrum. My hope is that the texture and tediousness of the embroidery will draw the viewer in and have them contemplate on what happens when a monumental subject becomes a punchline.
